This and That About Town.. Update!

Everybody loves Matt's sign.... Even those from out of town drive by twice and love it! Great refurbish, Matt!

And this tree is spectacular right now.... along with the new shutters and paint trim on this home... Great work!

Some Bevier homes are showplaces this summer. Look at all the pretty porches and flowers...

Riding to the Prom in style.... What a cute couple.
Hope I don't wait so long between updates. I'm not sure any of you ever check this blog anymore, and I sure don't blame ya if you've given up on us. Let us know with a comment if you are still out there! And spread the word that we'll be posting from time to time. Watch for a slide show of Prom dresses from the 2009 Prom.

Tomorrow is Christmas in Bevier

And it looks to be a clear and COLD day, which is much better than the past two years with just awful weather... Come downtown to the Black Diamond Building and see all the vendors... Then hop over to the RLDS Church for even more spectacular booths. Don't forget to visit the Catholic Church basement for the turkey dinner put on by the Pappenfohts... And while you're in town, check out the Heavenly Cottage Dollhouse at Wanda Wyatt's.. More goodies include a bake sale, Vespers at night, tea and candles from My Cup of Tea and Shady Peanut Lane, delicious cold cuts and cheeses from Matt's Market. and much, much more... Come early and enjoy a hometown Christmas... Check back for some photos.

Red Ribbon Week... Fall's Rush...

The town's decorations hero... and his Haunted Yard... Kids loved to trek though the maze of illuminated decor... As one starstruck elementary gal remarked, "Bobby's really got it going on!" Yeah, he does. Thank you, Bobby, for all your hard work! We can't wait to see the Christmas display....
RED RIBBON WEEK at Bevier C-4

Just a few shots of school doors who won the first three prizes for Red Ribbon Week. The anti-drug week featured winning costumes, daily prizes, facts about addiction, a "celebrity cemetery" with the sad reminder of all the great talents cut short by addictive behavior... and these doors.

Family Pride

During Opening night celebration families carried banners to proclaim pride in heritage, Bevier, and home. Balloons ascended, and the celebration began... (double click photo to enlarge)

Tea & Style Show

Nellie welcomed us in with lively piano selections, then we settled back to enjoy a great visit, wonderful tea and petit fours, and a brilliant style show featuring styles from days long past, and styles we sported yesterday...or what seems like yesterday. Check out more photos of the models, fashions, and candid shots from the Tea and Style Show on the slide show in the side bar. It takes a minute to load, but it's loaded with shots!

Crazy about Quilts!

Frank and Diane Adams graciously opened their beautiful Victorian home to us for the Quilt Show.

Later, at the Tea and Style Show, this beautiful quilt made by the Pappenfoht sisters was presented to the winner.

Sesqui Classic Car Show

The Classic Car Show was another big hit of the Sesqui Celebration. My fave was the yummy aqua-blue Thunderbird. I don't know anything about what was under the hood, but the chiffon scarf tied to the rear-view mirror was tres chic! I want that car. I NEED that car! But then again, every girl needs one. ~cg

Heritage Banner Parade

It takes a lot of names to fill a town! The Heritage Banner Parade gave us an opportunity to show the cultural diversity of our town. ~cg

More Shots of the Cemetery Tour and Tourists

The evening sun streamed through the trams, and the years passed us by--- this time in reverse. Through soft smiles and frequent tears we watched our citizens portray our loved ones. These candid shots give a little more view into one of the very special events of the Sesquicentennial. If anyone would like to comment and place names to the shots, we welcome that always.

Saturday Night Sparkle

The beautiful fireworks display on Sesqui Saturday Night was sponsored by Richard Compton (BHS Class of 1975) and his company, Compton Auction. ~cg

The Odd Fellows are gone, but the memories remain!

The Black Diamond building served as "home base" during the Sesquicentennial Celebration. The displays of memorabilia, photos and artwork were fabulous. I could have spent days reading all the wonderful stuff in there! There were fun things to buy, and I know the free coffee and cookies were very much appreciated by the out-of-town guests, especially during the cool (but perfect) evenings. Once again, hats off to Patty Cheever and the entire committee for giving us such a fabulous event! ~cg

A Tour of Historical Bevier

Those who boarded the tram for the historical tour of Bevier had the fortune to "meet" Dr. T.P. Gronoway in the home he used as a hospital in 1919...now meticulously restored and maintained by the Ricker family. ~cg

Cemetery Theatre - 1

I'm certain that the Cemetery Theatre at our Sesquicentennial celebration will be remembered for a long, long time. The presenters did a fabulous job and it was such a wonderful opportunity to hear about some of the people who have in some way touched the lives of everyone who has grown up or lived in Bevier. From the top:

Frank Chiarottino, the first Italian to settle in Bevier. He arrived in 1890 and his family has been growing strong ever since.

Robert (Bob) Lobmire, who will long be remembered as the guy who could remember...just about anything concerning Bevier!

Edi and Sita Pappenfoht...who came to this country to start a new life after WWII. The love and family spirit they brought to our community will live on for generations to come.

Hardie Smith, our "Mr. Fixit" who came to our rescue at all hours, in all weather. A true neighbor in every sense of the word.

Francis Dunn Jones, the Welsh immigrant who started the Bevier Appeal newspaper, a publication that not only chronicled our early history and family events, but also helped countless immigrants learn to read. ~cg

Cemetery Theatre - 2

The Cemetery Theatre continued...we heard from and about our beloved Bevier grocers Raymond "Pud" Weber and August Zuccarini, along with turn-of-the-century BHS Superintendent Mabel Richards.

The parents of the famous arealists The Flying Beckmans told us all about how their three boys (Ed, Will and Tom) got their start in show business. They entertained their Bevier friends in circus tents they made from gunny sacks, where match sticks were the price of admission. Later the toured the country with the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus!

The last stop on the tour was truly a highlight of the Sesquicentennial. Alex Rector, the man who discovered coal in Bevier, was portayed by his ggg-grandson Roger Rector...while his 4-g grandson, Seth Rector, became coal mining tycoon Thomas Wardell. FABULOUS!

The Colonel would have loved it!

What a wonderful surprise! Clarence Bevier, a 7th-generation descendant of Col. R.S. Bevier came from Florida to join our celebration! Clarence visited with many residents this past weekend, including our wonderful Sesquicentennial Chair, Patty Cheever (top) and the Pappenfoht girls (bottom). Clarence is not only a celebrity for descending from the Civil War hero after whom our town was named, but he has also set a Guiness Book World Record...for the fastest recitation of the alphabet...backwards! ~cg

Clarence Bevier during Saturday's events. What a treat to welcome our little city's namesake!

Mr. and Mrs. Bevier attended the style show and tea on Sunday afternoon.

On Friday evening Mr. Bevier recited the alphabet backwards... in what seemed like a fraction of a second. The citizens of Bevier truly appreciate the time and expense of such a long trip and would love to welcome the couple back again soon. --- gp

Uptown Downtown... all Around Wonderful...

Tram tours of the town and its sites of interest....

Flowers lovingly nurtured all summer to be a riot of color on this appointed day....
Once full of black diamonds, now brimmed with jewels of the fall...
Welcome to Bevier, and to the wonderful Sesquicentnnial Festival, Saturday, October 4, 2008
What a day... If a person could special order the weather to cooperate full one hundred percent, this would be that day. Sunny, mellow... just a bit of truly warm and nippy cool to satisfy everyone. This happy fellow welcomed the crowd to the wonderful Black Diamond Building, which housed the hospitality room and museum.

Nostalgia in the Park

Time to register and get your tickets. Catering tonight by Nolan's. Then on to the birthday cake and ice cream.
Bevier Senior High Band played some favorite melodies. Wish them luck Saturday as they enter competition at Truman State University Band Day.

One of the Practical English vocabulary words this week was "nostalgia." Seems they could have visited tonight's celebration to see a demonstration of this word in action. Frank Adams, took the crowd on a memory lane stroll as he mentioned many memories of days gone by.

Ready, set, celebrate!!!!!!

It's here.... The town looks amazing, and the citizens await the first night of the Bevier Sesquicentennial Celebration.

Community Choir takes us on a musical tour through the decades.

Black Diamond Re-do

Getting ready to welcome the Sesquicentennial Celebrations has been a lot of loving labor. Several community members have worked on the Black Diamond building. Here is a shot of Rick Tate, Patty Cheever, and Freddie Ricker doing some painting on the exterior. Many others worked on windows, interior, and scaping the building, including Nellie Skinner, Erica Pappenfoht, Anna Lowery, Cathy Ricker, Bonnie Patrick, Diana and Frank Adams, and.... I'll get back to ya if I left anyone out! Please let me know.. Thanks to everyone. -- gp

Clarence Basler and My Happiness

Gayla's post about Mr. Amedei made me remember Clarence Basler, who served as the Grand Marshall of our Homecoming parade for over 30 years. His prize-winning horses were awesome--they literally danced up the street! The first pic is My Happiness, the fabulous prancer. Clarence is then shown accepting a blue ribbon at the Huntsville Horse Show. The last photo includes Martha Selby, who rode the Basler's other spotted horse. Thanks for the photos, Sharon! ~cg

Bevier All-Stars - 40 Years!

Okay...so the All-Stars had their 40th reunion at the Odd Fellows building on Saturday of Homecoming. I show up to play "roving reporter" for the blog...without a battery in my camera. Oh well, Bill Herrin came up with these "oldies" to hold you over until someone takes pity and sends us pics from the reunion. By the way, that's Terry Peukert accepting one of the team's MANY trophies earned between 1968 and 1971. ~cg

Memories from Homecoming '81

That's Wendy McVicker and her cousin Christopher McLin bringing a bit of Bedrock to Bevier as Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm...and Wendy's grandma Nellie driving her dad's '51 Ford! ~cg

Centennial Couple

Isn't this a great photo of T.W. and Marge Swind? They're in costume for our 1958 Centennial! Thanks to Marge's niece, Vickie, for sharing this with the blog! ~cg

Now I'm lovin' that Johnny Lee!

I've never been a country music fan, but I found myself in a lawn chair on Friday night of Homecoming, watching the Johnny Lee show. I have to admit that I LOVED IT! What a great performer, and a real crowd-pleaser. He sounded great on all his hits -- "Lookin' For Love," "One In A Million," "Pickin' Up Strangers," "Prisoner of Hope," "Be There for Me Baby," "Cherokee Fiddle," "Sounds Like Love," "Hey Bartender," "Rollin' Lonely" and lots more. Between sets he graciously signed all autographs, and even went into the crowd to greet folks. Thanks to our great Homecoming Committee for bringing in these great entertainers each year! They do a fabulous job, and our Homecoming is one of the last venues where you can see such talent for FREE! ~cg

It's a family thing!

This is just a small sampling of the Italian family names you'll find in our home town. It's fun to hear of the friendly rivalry between them at parade time! (Se non è vero, è ben trovato!) From top to bottom, Zuccarini, Biondi, Beltramo, Chiarottino and Contratto, who took home the first-place trophy with the boat float! ~cg

The Definition of Happiness

Happiness is...having your big sister take you on your first big-girl ride at the Bevier Homecoming! That's Miss Mara, and her big sister Brittney! ~cg

A Class Act...

It was great to see the classes of 1998, 1968 and 1958 celebrating reunions during our Sesquicentennial year! ~cg

A '78 Luau

Apologies to all vegetarians -- I just had to add a shot of that terrific roasted pig! The 78'ers continued their float theme into a huge tent for a wonderful Luau reunion, which they shared with the old folks from '77. Great fun! ~cg

Everybody loves a parade

Here comes the 2008 Bevier Homecoming Parade. My shots were taken from midway, and soon you will also see more from Cindi, who was viewing from another vantage... (Don't forget to click photos to see larger view!) The day was breezy and nice... We have our Grand Marshall, John R. Amedei. Mr. Amedei was Superintendent of Bevier C-4 School for many years, and he hired me to teach English when I was only 21 years old.... first time teacher. He is kind, intelligent, a "big picture" thinker, and a great man. Much respect and praise for Mr. Amedei.

Queen Shelby Cross will be a sophomore next year. First Princess Lindsey Basler will be a Junior.
Second Princess Lindsay Lowe will be a Senior.

The Marching Wildcat Band sounded great.
Mr. Christy, the new band director.

Little Mr. and Miss Bevier, Haley and Ashton

Due to technical and other difficulties, this is all I snapped. I'm looking forward to seeing more from someone else. Add a comment if you would like to identify anyone in these pictures.

And the winner is...

JEAN BOZE!

Come to Shady Peanut Lane any time and claim your prize shown here... Jean is one of our treasured "commenters" who said in one comment she missed most of the Bevier Centennial celebration while having a baby... Jean has no such plans for this year's October celebration, and we enjoy her additions to our posts so much. Thank you Jean, for participating in our June contest. See you at the parade?

Salute to Bevier's Thursday Night Event...

Here we are at the evening festivities for Bevier Homecoming '08. Since this is both the Sesquicentennial Year and the 75th Homecoming, many of tonight's performances featured reunions of local performers from a few years ago.... But of course, it also blended in just the right amount of talent and input from today's young people. They need to make their memories, too! (You can click on any photo to see it in a larger view... )
Hope Ricker Marino's School of Twirling welcomed 44 former students who announced name, favorite song, and happy memories of days with Hope. We were told by one twirler that the ability to whirl that baton is a lifetime skill... and evidently that is sooo true. Every single one of the women on stage could spin their batons with ease. Such fun!
Here is a shot of the singing group known as the Bevierettes. Led by Joetta Amedei Walter, these young women took the crowd down memory lane a bit, too.
Don't forget the alumni band, who joined the Bevier Current High School Band for some wonderful music. They brought the crowd to its feet as they closed their program with the School Fight Song... Once a Wildcat, always a wildcat I think.
These pictures don't do anyone justice. Look at the rainbow of lovely young women competing for '08 Queen. They were judged on many factors including this evening wear event and a very important interview with the judges. They also were able to mingle with queens from the past at a tea held in the Baptist Church educational building. What a cool event. The queen for this year is Shelby Cross; first princess is Lindsey Basler; and second princess is Lindsay Lowe... Everyone looked beautiful, including more that didn't get in the line of the camera due to some speakers. Lovely girls!

Former Queens from Bevier Homecoming Past.
Former queens.... looking lovely as always. Here we see the grounds during the quiet afternoon... The calm before the storm for the concession stands, Home of famed funnel cakes, wild rides, and the World famous Bevier Homecoming Hamburger.

You must be present to win! And register every night... Prizes range from hats and t-shirts to 100 dollars cash... The crowd sticks around for that.
Lights upon the midway.... This year's Murphy Brothers carnival steals the show for the younger ones while the Grandstand claims the attention for those seeking memories.... Two more nights await. And the parade on Saturday. See you there.. Don't forget your hamburgers.

Get-Together at Ugo's for Homecoming Today.....

Images of alumni and friends at Ugolini's Pizza today in Bevier... Many brought scrapbooks and photos to share with the group, and of course, the blog is scanning several of those for you....
Marilyn is back from Houston! She has on a new Bevier Homecoming shirt, and I'll try to get a picture of the logo tomorrow. It is wonderful.. Available at JP's and Matt's Market.

Favors for the group.... Candy tucked inside....

Patty, Doralee, Janet, and Dominica.... Sharing stories about school, community events, and Homecomings from the past.... Memories are wonderful stuff.
Wanda and Irene Wyatt.... Such sweet gals.
Hope to see you all out this year at Homecoming.. Lots of wonderful hometown events... we will have a Queen reunion, past twirler performance with all Hope's former students, alumni band... and much more... If any of this sounds like something you'd like to do, jump right in....
See you this week. Don't forget tomorrow night is the Ice Cream Social with the Crazy Cats.... or is it Krazy Kats????

Bevier All-Stars Reunion This Weekend!

The Bevier All-Stars were so wonderful to watch! Tara and Amy sent us this pic of their dad, David Winn at the bat. It was 1960 and they were playing a team from Clarence in Ardmore. Jim Wood from Clarence is the catcher. Thanks for all the memories, guys. Have fun at your reunion this weekend! ~cg

More from 1978...

Funny how it doesn't seem to take many years to make class photos seem really...well, ummm...dated? Check out Class of '78 in all their bell-bottomed glory, inside Macon's old Sanatorium building, before the remodel. Next is a group photo of da boyz -- Tom, Bobby, Danny, Mike, Russell, Randy, Robert, Mike, Ricky and Donald. And, because nothing says "royalty" like polyester -- Crystal Peter and Mike Cross, the '78 JIJI (yearbook) king and queen! Thank you for sharing these great pics, Deb! ~cg

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Deb Sprague as Mary Poppins in the Bevier Homecoming parade in `66 - 1st place! She remembers: "My grandma made that outfit; I tried to "fly" using the umbrella running down a hill on a windy day, and was convinced that I'd done it, at least a little!"

First-Place Centennial Year Float

1958 - Baker's Market received first place in the Centennial parade. The float, "A Century of Memories," depicted a miner's home life in the early days. Thelma Baker, dressed in the fashion of long ago, was busy at the old-fashioned range, preparing supper for the family. The miner, Martin Baker, with his lunch bucket under his arm had returned from the day's work at the mine. The table was "set" and the delicious loaves of homemade bread awaited the family. Several children, in appropriate costumes, made up the family.

Vintage Basketball!

Are those shorts for real? Yikes! It's the Bevier HS basketball team from wayyyy back. We're not even sure of the year. Here are Coach Jim Griffiths, Bob Stuart, Norman Gilstrap, Delbert Eddy, Major Douglas Dale, Bill Bott, John Bott, Harlin Shoemaker, Martin Baker, Woodrow Grimon (sp?), and Emery Daniels. ~cg

Bevier Homecoming - 40 Years Ago!

Yep...pretty sure this was from 1968. It's the Bevier Civic Club float with Brad Sprague on the slide and Gary Pagliai standing at attention beside the flag! Debbie Sprague, Alan Sprague and Shelly Pagliai are there too, with three others we can't identify. Can you help? ~cg

New Shots of Summer's Italian Festival

Thanks so much to Krista Julius, who sent us these shots of the Italian Festival in downtown Bevier this June. Krista says she cannot wait until the Bevier Homecoming. She lives in Kansas City, and we can't wait to see her!
Don't forget the Bevier Homecoming Web Site. Mark your calendars for August 6-9th.
